Description

Combat Academic Dishonesty & Create a Culture of Integrity in Virtual & In-person Classrooms

You and your staff will hear from our expert presenter – University Dean of Students at the University of Virginia’s Dr. Allen Groves – who works closely with the University of Virginia’s student-run, 145-year-old honor code. He breaks down everything you need to know to establish or manage a code designed to maintain institutional values of integrity, trust and honesty, including in the virtual (online) classroom necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

You’ll review everything you must consider related to establishing or managing a system for addressing allegations of plagiarism, theft and other forms of dishonesty including:

  • The composition of any jury panel
  • Procedures to be followed to ensure appropriate due process
  • Standard of proof to be applied
  • Rights of appeal
  • Whether students may be represented by legal counsel in proceedings
  • The scope of jurisdiction for the system
  • The limitations period within which actions may be brought
  • Whether or not to employ a single or multiple sanction system
  • Whether or not to employ other optional procedures short of trial to resolve an allegation
  • Training/orientation of students and faculty on the system
  • Strategies for obtaining community buy-in to the system

Challenge your students to maintain a culture of integrity and a community of trust, despite the decrease in honesty and respect nationwide. You’ll improve your campus community overall – and graduate students with values that put your institution’s mission into action.

Topics Covered

As a result of this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate and assess the strengths and weaknesses of the procedures currently used by your institution to address cases alleging plagiarism, unauthorized peer collaboration, use of online resources in a “virtual” exam and other forms of academic dishonesty — establish or manage an honor code system to ensure you are maintaining your institution’s values of integrity, trust and honesty.
  • Determine the appropriate scope of cases your institution wants to handle under an honor system – ensure due process from investigation, hearing and sanctioning processes by creating a seamless system that ensures students’ rights are protected.
  • Assess the respective merits of a single sanction and multiple sanction honor system and the standard of proof required to impose such sanctions – combat academic dishonesty, theft and other forms of dishonesty by creating a campus climate that embraces integrity and a strong moral compass.
  • Determine how to address cases in which a student asserts the impact of a psychological or other medical condition as a defense.
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a student-run system versus a system staffed by faculty and staff – once determined, obtain community buy-in to foster support, adherence and trust.
  • Create a community-wide honor code training program for faculty and students – improve overall campus community behavioral standards.
