When Professor Cris Hassold, an art history professor at New College of Florida, passed away, 31 of her favorite students received a stunning surprise: her life savings. Hassold lived modestly while secretly amassing a $2.8 million estate divided among some of her favorite people with payments ranging between $26,000 and $560,000. “She wanted to give as much away as she could,” said one former student.
Another student, Dr. Nicole Archer, who is now an associate professor of art history and gender studies at Montclair State University (NJ), felt the money was like a message from her mentor, she told The New York Times: “Here’s a little something to help you be you.”
