Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee recently signed into law a measure requiring all colleges in the state to stock naloxone/Narcan in all college-run housing starting September 1. And the law mandates that Resident Assistants must be trained to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and on how to administer the overdose reversal medication.

Similar laws have been enacted in Maryland, Washington state and Connecticut.

Overdoses are often driven by opioids laced with fentanyl, which is present in 75% of all adolescent overdose deaths, reported The Public’s Radio. The substance is often found in street drugs and fake pills made to look like anxiety and ADHD medications.
