The worldwide Crochet Coral Reef is a communal art project where life-size coral reefs are made entirely out of crochet in response to climate change. Williams College (MA) is participating in the regional Berkshires Satellite Reef project, hosting Coral Crochet Workshops where instruction and student kits are provided, as they work toward an on-campus immersive installation in the spring of 2026.
The college also offers weekly drop-in Coral Crochet Circles, plus participants can create their own coral of any size, dimension, color, material or type and drop them off for inclusion in the overall project.
“Each coral will be a participant’s own personal voice, so we hope that you choose whatever appeals most to you,” the project website explains. “And a single coral can be one or many colors, as you choose. We hope the reef will be quite colorful but we also intend to have a section representing coral bleaching with light and white yarns.”
