Description
Be Proactive, Strategic & Prepared to Ensure a Smooth Election Season on Campus
As the 2024 election moves into its final stage, the charged political climate, which has become marred by violence, has left many administrators fearing that more is on the horizon. Don’t let your campus become victim to negative actions or disruptive behavior leading up to the election – or in the aftermath by those who feel let down by election results.
Be prepared: Join a national conversation with senior higher education leadership to understand the steps that will ensure a civil and respectful campaign season on your campus. Our presenter – Grant Azdell, a nationally-recognized higher education expert – will provide key takeaways on handling difficult situations like:
- How to proactively dial back negative rhetoric from any political position or group, without stifling free speech.
- Specific strategies you can share with faculty members to control, manage and moderate difficult discussions and conversations in the classroom setting – provide specific tools so faculty feel prepared to face a conflicted, confused and emotional student body.
- How to respond to the mental health impact involved for students, faculty and staff who were passionate about candidates and political positions and come out on the losing end of the vote.
- Ways to think strategically about possible pop-up protests, activists, off-campus protestors who might stage protests – or any unwelcome gathering - on your campus – avoid violent and “news making” events by being out in front of any possible gatherings.
- How to discuss civility and the important role that higher education plays in terms of building and establishing Democracy – join with other higher education leaders in promoting and pushing a message of civility post-election.
Elections can bring high conflict, putting strain on campus communities. As we head into the 2024 election season, encourage a climate of respect and civility, rather than polarization and hostility. Contain campus conflict and transform discourse by encouraging community members to become thoughtful, engaged citizens.
