Recognize Signs of Addiction, Provide Educational Programming & Intervene Successfully to Help Students in Trouble
A 2023 NCAA survey found that nearly 60% of young adults (18-22) have engaged in some form of sports betting, with the figure rising to 67% for students living on campus. This includes being actively engaged in sports betting at a high frequency. More than 15 percent of students surveyed admitted to engaging in at least one risky gambling behavior – and alarmingly – 6% reported losing more than $500 in a single day due to sports betting.
Many young people, including college students, fall into the trap of thinking that betting is a way to earn easy money. Unfortunately, many of these same students end up getting a lesson in statistics and find themselves deep into debt very quickly. College and University personnel often learn about this problem when it is too late to fix and the addiction has grown into a distraction that pulls students away from their primary job of academics, leading to having to drop out of school because they ended up with significant gambling debt.
Join us on September 16, 2025, to learn about sport betting on campus and how you can help raise awareness, intervene when necessary, and combat the problem overall.
