Remove Roadblocks to Student Development & Success
Helicopter parents have become sledgehammer parents, causing an inordinate amount of time to be spent in triangulation communications between staff, parents and students. Often this is because students lack the executive functioning skills required to handle their own concerns. Overreaching parents continue to step in more and more, preventing the growth of their student in the process.
Join us on November 12, 2024 when our expert presenter – Dr. Grant Azdell, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Randolph-Macon College – will explore strategies for working successfully with today’s overreaching parents and guardians, so you can focus your efforts on developing students’ skills to handle their own challenges, give them the confidence to ask their parents to back off, and de-escalate situations when individuals are unhappy with your response.
Topics Covered
Gain crucial, actionable takeaways that will help you:
- Explore techniques to work with parents to help them understand the difference between their student’s “needs”, “rights” and “wants”, so they can be removed as a roadblock to their student’s ability to develop resilience and life skills.
- Engage in conversations with overreaching parents, but know when to terminate a phone call or email exchange.
- Involve the student, even when the parent or guardian says they don’t want to do so.
- Utilize FERPA to your advantage.
- Deal with anger as it presents itself from a parent – know what your response should be when a parent or guardian exclaims, “I’m going to sue the institution!”.
- Explore your institutional tolerance for refusing to speak to a parent as a solution.
- Learn how to develop your students’ ability to handle their own “stuff” and to help them appropriately ask their parents to let them handle their challenges on their own.
- Create partners in parents and guardians, rather than enemies.
