October’s LGBTQ+ History Month events at Cosumnes River College (CA) kicked off with a bouquet making event in the Center for Inclusion and Belonging. Attendees used craft supplies and flowers to share words of encouragement with both members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies.
“It’s the symbolism behind it,” Jennifer Martinez, the college’s Pride Center specialist, told The Connection. “With a lot of anti-LGBTQ legislation being passed, we want to make sure our students and staff feel supported and appreciated.”
“My bouquet is a token of allyship to LGBTQ+ students and a symbol of appreciation,” said Akaysia Hill, a member of the institution’s mental health team. “Working in the mental health field, I have seen how vulnerable some LGBTQ+ students are. I want them to know they are supported.”
