Finnegan, a 4-year-old Bernese Mountain dog, is the newest member of the Personal Counseling Center team at Providence College (RI). He and his human, Rosemary Fernandes Mugan, executive director of Providence’s Counseling Center, are certified as a pet therapy team. And students can sign up on Thursdays to get a little bit of Finnegan time.

Students can spend about 10 minutes with Finnegan in the center’s group room, petting him and just sitting with him to help regulate their emotions. For students missing their own pets, he offers a positive reminder of home.

“Finnegan absolutely loves people and wants to meet everyone that he comes across!” Mugan told the director of the college’s Parent and Family Program. “He’s pretty large – 105 pounds, but he wants to sit on your lap or right on your feet as if he is a lap pup.”
