Sometimes we need simple coping mechanisms to make meaning amid hard times. The concept of adopting a one-word mantra – from “courage” to “build” to “openness” and so many others – can provide self-guidance when the going gets tough. Focus on a word that has meaning for you. And then determine how to bring it to life in your words and actions, as a mantra to guide you.

A suggestion: have a small chalkboard or white board in your living space where you can write your word of intention. That way, you’ll see it multiple times each day, reminding you to incorporate that concept into your daily doings.

So, what one-word mantra has meaning for you?

Taking Action

For even more encouragement, take your one-word mantra and come up with an action step for each letter. For instance, if your word is “courage” you might develop something that looks like this…

Corral my confidence by remembering what I’m good at

Open my heart to people and possibilities

Understand that this process will take time

Recall a time I was brave and what that felt like

Ask trusted friends and family how they summon their own courage

Gauge what a doable first risk could be for myself

Enjoy seeing what I’m capable of!

This step can include whatever holds meaning for you. Give it a try!
