At Morgan State University (MD), they have a whole suite of campus-wide retention initiatives that have led to ten-point increases in retention and graduation rates. They include an Alumni Mentoring Program, Summer Programs for Freshmen, a Financial Literacy Curriculum, a Parents’ 411 Newsletter, a Freshman Orientation Course and much more. An Academic Recovery Program engages and attempts to rehabilitate students who are eligible for dismissal or suspension, along with programs that intervene to help students prevent “D” or “F” grades.
In addition, the office supports initiatives such as a FAFSA Filing Campaign to get these necessary forms registered, Financial Aid Probation to reduce the number of students ineligible to receive financial aid and an Early Alert & Response System/Starfish to help faculty intervene when students are performing below expectations.
