At Emory University, pre-health science peer mentors provide advising appointments, office hours, club events and other engagements through the campus Pathways Center. They’re paid $15 per hour as student employees and also serve on one of four subcommittees, receiving training at the beginning of their service with monthly team touch-up trainings throughout the year.
Emory University’s Pathways Center connected five different student-facing offices, including career services, pre-health advising, undergraduate research, national scholarships and fellowships, and experiential learning. “It brings together what were existing functions but are now streamlined to make it easier for students to access,” the center’s associate dean Branden Grimmett told Inside Higher Ed.
Digital marketing through a dedicated Instagram account, plus a weekly newsletter, helps peer mentors spread the word about their services.
The peer mentors get a lot out of the experience, too. “That’s been one of my favorite parts of being a peer mentor: getting to help students recognize their strengths and guide them through things that I’ve been through myself,” Leia Marshall told the publication.
