It’s one thing to have a Student Success Coaching program and quite another to get students to take advantage of it. Here are some possible motivations to share…
- Show Cause and Effect. Hearing from successful peers who extol the virtues of your success coaching program while directly showing how it helped them — from increasing confidence to improving grades, positively impacting well-being and more — can make a positive impression on students. They’ll see the cause and effect of being involved.
- Link It to Employability. Using simple data points, show how success coaching participants develop both hard and soft skills directly connected to how employable they become. Consider using statistics like, “90% of success coaching participants in 2023 found gainful employment.”
- Use Incentives. Perhaps college swag, gift cards or scholarship funds can interest students in trying your coaching program. The quality and connections will make them want to stay!
- Normalize Success Coaching. When groups of students work with success coaches — either as a mandatory initiative or a matter of fact “here’s a strategy many students incorporate into their learning approach” statement — that normalizes it. Work to characterize success coaching as an everyday part of being a student and how seeking this type of help is a sign of strength and wisdom.
- Incorporate It into Curricular and Co-Curricular Life. Consider making success coaching presentations within classes, in the residence halls, during orientation and more. Have success coaches come to First-Year Experience classes and programs. Meet with Adult Student Learners in the Commuter Lounge. Determine how to spread the message within many nooks and crannies of campus life.
