Yale’s President Peter Salovey encouraged each school and administration division to develop five-year plans to improve diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and create a sense of belonging. Highlights of these plans were turned into infographic posters on the Belonging at Yale website. They include initiatives such as Yale Athletics creating a student-athlete leadership team to give voice to underrepresented athletes, Yale Health gathering demographics to help assess the quality of care among various segments of the community, the School of Architecture establishing a center/lab focused on issues of spatial justice and much more.

The plans focus on the six broad areas of: scholarship, research, practice and teaching; the diversity of the Yale community; equitable processes, procedures and responses; professional and personal development of inclusive practice; acknowledgement, recognition and respect; and communication, transparency and accountability.

“These unit plans reflect varying cultures and contexts and build upon work that has been under way across Yale to support faculty, students, staff, and alumni,” Salovey said. “The plans require dedicated work on many fronts, from education to research and from everyday campus operations to visionary new initiatives.”
