In an effort to reach out to Latino families, highlight the importance of literacy and promote awareness of college and community resources, MiraCosta College (CA) will host the annual Latino Book & Family Festival this month. Authors, workshops, entertainment, a children’s stage, bilingual activities, food and book giveaways will be featured. The festival will kick off with a showing of the movie “Real Women Have Curves” with actress America Ferrera, written by Chicana playwright Josefina López, who will do a keynote speech later during the festival.

Author and playwright Victor Villaseñor (Rain of Gold and others) will also be a featured keynote speaker. Workshops will include topics such as “Write and Illustrate Your Own ‘Nopal’ Poem,” “Books for Good Trouble,” “How to Market Our Latino Based Books” and “La importancia de la educación financiera en la familia.” Entertainment will include dance teams, choirs, Ballet Folklórico and more.
