‘Tis the season for planting on many college campuses as part of Earth Day and Arbor Day festivities, as well as in preparation for commencement activities. At the University of Iowa, volunteers from throughout the campus and community recently worked to plant a Miyawaki forest filled with approximately 4,000 native seedlings, designed to support the health and diversity of the institution’s tree habitat.

A reforestation practice, the Miyawaki method involves densely planting native seedlings to mimic the natural growth process of a conventional forest, according to the Office of Strategic Communication at UI.
