Nearly 30 U.S. institutions of higher education have adopted the Okanagan Charter, which makes them Health Promoting Universities. And the University of California, Santa Cruz recently joined that cohort. The purpose is to proactively and seamlessly integrate health considerations into daily operations, business practices and academic pursuits to enhance overall well-being.

"By committing to the Okanagan Charter, UC Santa Cruz is taking a proactive stance in prioritizing the health and well-being of our campus community," UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Cynthia Larive told the university’s NewsCenter. “Our hope is that this initiative will foster a more supportive and nurturing campus environment where every individual can thrive.”

The institution will focus on five key areas through the Okanagan Charter:

  • Enhancing belonging and connection
  • Promoting faculty and academic success
  • Fostering a culture of well-being
  • Prioritizing sustainability
  • Fortifying supporting infrastructure

A UC Santa Cruz Well-Being Collective will provide oversight and support. Learn more about it all here.
