LaGuardia Community College, a CUNY School in New York City, recently opened its Finca La Florecita (Little Flower Farm) urban farm to serve as a research and learning space offering students hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture. A sensory garden for on-campus daycare children, fruit trees, benches and shade areas will help the space be used for community and educational activities.

Two large-scale murals by graduates of LaGuardia’s Fine Arts program will be displayed at the farm, featuring scenes of farming, family and cultivation.

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, U.S. Rep. Nydia Velázquez said the farm offered opportunities for underserved students. “Many students, especially low-income students, have never been to a farm,” she said, as reported by licpost.com. “Here, they can pick up vegetables and new skills. All it takes is one individual with a great idea. But in order to execute that idea and put it to work, it takes a whole village.”
