Tidewater Community College (VA) is able to provide all qualifying student parents with free child care for children ages 2-5 thanks to the federal Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant program. They’re one of the only community colleges in the state to provide full-day on-campus child care to help remove a barrier to college completion. The child care center is located right in the student center.
To qualify for CCAMPIS, students must be Pell-eligible, in good academic standing and enrolled in at least nine credit hours, according to WHRO Public Media. Students who don’t qualify can seek scholarships available to help provide low-to-no cost child care.
Staff at Tidewater can also send their kids to the child care center at a discounted rate. Down the road, TCC aims to open child care centers on all four of its campuses.
