The California State University (CSU) system is proposing a “Beyond Completion” initiative to better prepare students for starting careers or entering grad school after they earn their degrees, according to Chancellor Mildred García. It’s part of the system’s Student Success Framework, looking at postgraduation outcomes as the nation focuses on ensuring students’ degrees are worthy investments.
“It is going to be definitely moving to the next level of what we think is student success—what is our responsibility as a university system to help these students live fulfilling careers and a fulfilling life?” García told Inside Higher Ed. She said that first generation, low income, students of color and/or adult student learners who make up “the new majority” tend to “come to college seeing that as social mobility.”
García explained that these students don’t have the same social capital or personal connections to get into their desired career fields as other more advantaged students. So, the CSU system is looking at ways to use data as well as to partner with stakeholders who can help introduce students to multiple careers, create paid internships for them and provide additional assistance.
