Campus Dining at Princeton University (NJ) has launched a pilot of their Tiger Box reusable to-go container program, designed to reduce packaging waste. Participants can reuse their containers – initially available for a non-refundable $5 fee – whether they eat in or take out, receiving a 25 cent discount each time they use it. Each container can withstand at least 1000 uses.
Once participants use their containers, they’re asked to wipe them clean and return them to the cashier. The cashier then taps the user’s TigerCard and either provides a clean container or issues a virtual token associated with the user’s account so they’ll have a container credit next time they dine. All containers are sanitized by Campus Dining between use, according to their website.
The pilot program is currently available in the Chemistry CaFe and EQuad Café, with program expansion potentially being considered for the Fall.
