The Temple Cats organization, headed up by a professor at the Boyer College of Music and Dance, works to care for the feral cat community on the university’s grounds. Through a Facebook group, volunteers are recruited to control the cat population, get them vaccinated for rabies, feed them and take care of their needs.
The group works with Philadelphia’s Animal Care and Control Service Provider (ACCT), one of the city’s animal shelters. Volunteers safely trap feral cats and take them to ACCT to be neutered or spayed, as well as vaccinated for rabies, before releasing them back to their original location.
“Feral cats, you can’t socialize,” Temple Cats volunteer Jennifer Keller told The Temple News. “It’d be like trying to socialize a squirrel, it’s just not really possible. So they have to stay on the street.”
